    Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. It has 32 academic departments, emphasizing science and engineering.The Times 2013 reputation rankings places it number two in the world, behind Harvard University. It is co-educational, and first admitted women in 1876. Its first female graduate, Ellen Swallow Richards became the first President of the American Home Economics Association in 1908.

    Founded in 1861, the institute used a polytechnic university model and stressed laboratory instruction.[12] The emphasis on applied technology at all levels led to cooperation with industry. MIT was elected to the Association of American Universities in 1934. Researchers worked on computers,radar, and inertial guidance during World War II and the Cold War. Post-war defense research contributed to the rapid expansion of the faculty and campus under James Killian.
